WHAT IS VESTIBULAR DYSFUNCTION?
Vestibular dysfunction affects the inner ear and brain systems responsible for balance, knowing where you are in space and keeping your vision stable when you move. It can be caused by concussion, inner ear problems, migraines, medications, infections, aging or sometimes develops without an obvious trigger. When your vestibular system isn't functioning well, you may experience dizziness, vertigo, balance problems, blurred vision or difficulty with normal activities. Without treatment, vestibular dysfunction can significantly limit your ability to work, drive, exercise and participate in social activities—leading to reduced independence and quality of life.
Common Symptoms:
Vertigo
Dizziness
Falls
Balance issues
Visual disturbances
Nausea
TYPES OF VESTIBULAR DYSFUNCTION
We evaluate and treat a wide range of vestibular conditions, including:
1. Functional Dizziness
Functional dizziness (also called Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness or PPPD) refers to persistent feelings of unsteadiness, dizziness, or imbalance that are not caused by structural damage to the inner ear or brain, but rather by changes in how the nervous system processes balance and sensory information. These symptoms often develop after an initial vestibular event or may be triggered by anxiety, stress, or heightened sensory sensitivity. Although no structural damage is present, the symptoms are very real, can significantly affect daily life, and respond well to specialized rehabilitation.
2. Central vs. Peripheral Dizziness
Dizziness can originate from several different systems in the body, so one of our first goals is to identify the underlying cause through comprehensive assessment. A critical distinction is whether your symptoms stem from the peripheral vestibular system—the inner ear structures and vestibular nerve—or the central vestibular system within the brain and brainstem. Determining which system is involved guides our treatment approach and helps us target the specific area that needs rehabilitation for optimal recovery.
3. Vestibular Migraine
Vestibular migraine is a neurological condition where episodes of dizziness, vertigo, or balance problems occur in people with a history of migraines—even without a headache being present. The underlying issue is a disruption in how the brain processes balance, movement, and spatial information. Common symptoms include persistent imbalance, motion sensitivity (especially with head movement), dizziness triggered by visual stimuli (like scrolling screens, busy patterns, or moving through crowds), lightheadedness, a rocking or swaying sensation, and nausea. Vestibular migraine is one of the most common causes of episodic vertigo and responds well to targeted treatment.
4. Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is one of the most common causes of vertigo, creating brief episodes of spinning sensation triggered by specific head movements. BPPV occurs when tiny calcium crystals (called otoconia) within the inner ear become dislodged and move into the wrong canal, disrupting your sense of balance. While episodes can be unsettling and disruptive, BPPV itself is not dangerous—though it can increase fall risk if left untreated. Symptoms are typically brought on by changes in head position, such as looking up or down, lying back, rolling over in bed, or sitting up. Episodes usually last 30-60 seconds but can vary in intensity, from mild unsteadiness to severe spinning. The good news: BPPV often responds very well to specific repositioning maneuvers performed during treatment.
5. Cervicogenic Dizziness
Cervicogenic dizziness is a type of dizziness and imbalance that originates from dysfunction in the neck. Unlike true vertigo (spinning), cervicogenic dizziness typically presents as unsteadiness, lightheadedness, or a sense of being off-balance that's directly related to neck problems or head position. This condition commonly develops after whiplash injuries, concussion, poor neck posture, cervical spine dysfunction, or degenerative changes that affect how the brain receives and interprets information from the neck. Treatment focuses on restoring proper neck function through manual therapy, exercises, and postural correction, often combined with vestibular rehabilitation to fully restore balance and stability. Common symptoms include dizziness or imbalance triggered by neck movement or sustained head positions, neck pain or stiffness accompanying the dizziness, headaches originating from the neck, and difficulty with balance—especially in busy visual environments or while walking.

OUR vestibular TREATMENT APPROACH
Customized plans based on objective data and evidence-based protocols.

Neurological Exam & Diagnosis
Comprehensive assessment using advanced diagnostic tools to identify specific areas of brain dysfunction.

Balance & Coordination Training
Progressive exercises to improve stability on various surfaces, enhance postural control, and reduce fall risk through vestibular adaptation and compensation.

Visual-Vestibular Therapy
Graded gaze stabilization exercises that improve the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR), reduce visual motion sensitivity, and help you maintain clear vision during head movement.

Manual Therapy & Chiropractic Care
Targeted spinal manipulation and soft tissue therapy to address neck dysfunction, improve cervical mobility, and reduce cervicogenic dizziness and headaches.

Cognitive Retraining
Dual-task training that combines balance and movement exercises with cognitive challenges to improve concentration, reduce mental fatigue and anxiety, and rebuild confidence in real-world situations.

Ongoing Monitoring
Regular objective testing to measure functional improvements, track neurological recovery, and adjust your treatment protocol based on your progress and response to therapy.
common questions about VESTIBULAR care
What’s the difference between dizziness and vertigo?
Vertigo is a specific type of dizziness where you feel spinning—either you or your surroundings. Dizziness is a broader term that can also mean lightheadedness, feeling off-balance, or general unsteadiness. Distinguishing between these is crucial because they have different causes and treatments. We use detailed symptom history and objective testing to pinpoint your specific type of dizziness and create the right treatment plan.
Will my insurance cover concussion treatment?
Specialized therapies—including advanced vestibular rehabilitation, vision therapy, and comprehensive multi-modal treatment—are typically not covered by most insurance plans, as insurers often classify these services as experimental or investigational, even though they're supported by current research.
We provide detailed cost estimates upfront so there are no surprises, and we're happy to provide documentation you can submit for possible reimbursement. For services not covered by insurance, we offer flexible payment plans to make care accessible.
Our priority is getting you the treatment you need—we'll work with you to find a financial solution that fits your situation.
Can vestibular rehab help after a car accident?
Yes, vestibular rehab is highly effective after car accidents. Whiplash and head trauma commonly damage the neck, inner ear, and brain systems that control balance—causing dizziness, vertigo, imbalance, and visual problems. We evaluate which specific systems are affected and provide targeted treatment including vestibular therapy, chiropractic care, and vision training. Most patients see significant improvement with proper rehabilitation.
How long does vestibular therapy take?
It depends on your condition and how long you've had symptoms. Acute issues like BPPV may improve in 1-3 sessions, while post-concussion or chronic vestibular dysfunction typically requires 6-12 weeks of consistent treatment for significant improvement. We monitor your progress with objective testing and adjust your timeline as needed. Most patients see meaningful gains within the first month when they follow their personalized program.
we accept most insurance companies
We make care accessible by accepting most major insurance plans, including state coverage, so you can focus on healing not the paperwork.
